From my observing, sensing, and exploring, there seems to me to be a fog around. It seems to be experienced inwardly and outwardly, personally and collectively. More than usually, it’s hard for anything to go straight without bumping into unforeseen or chameleon-like obstacles which prevent things from reaching their goals. What things? What goals? Exactly; such is this obfuscation: shine a light directly at it and the fog is reflected back.

In feeling out, from my own and others’ perspectives, the spirit of these times, the Zeitgeist, I bumped into various archetypes. I was drawn to those of the Sage and Bringer of Light, to the Seeker, the Anti-Christ, and also to consider those parts of us which I see thence constellated: the depressive; the anxious one who cannot stop; the stoic who keeps on keeping on despite there being no sign of hope; the cynic, perhaps protecting the inner bewildered child in the fairground which was so magical and exciting until both her mother and her father disappeared.

In this talk, I will be exploring what I am calling a kind of psychic interregnum – how particularly in these times, uncertainty is being experienced on so many levels of our lives. There is a standing invitation that many of us feel to dive deeper, to find what is truly trustworthy, to hope to further the possibility of a personal metanoia, a light-bringing epiphany, if not yet a collective one. Speaking of eucatastrophe – a sudden and final reversal of fortunes – Tolkien said,

“The art of a good fairy tale is that however terrible the world might be, when the eucatastrophe comes, it gives the man or the child that hears it, a catch of the breath, a beat, and a lifting of the heart.”

I am writing this on January 31st, 2026, amidst a mercurial and strange part of this fairy tale. However, while traveling forward may seem difficult, there are a lot of things that one can still do in a fog. Mark the busily communicating networks of fungi beneath the forest, and note that fog is not opaque – it’s just kind of weird and discombobulating. And I feel it asks something different of us, singly and together.

Perhaps also trustworthy beyond all this is that latent promise, as in Jung’s work and in a quote from the Delphic Oracle that sat over the entrance to his house in Kusnacht (translated): “Called or not, the God will be present.”

As we look at these things together, I hope in this presentation to also provide a space and time for personal inner reflection of your own response and your own experience of this Zeitgeist so we can explore and share practical ways to feel more connected to both our feet and the intuition of our hearts.

The C. G. Jung Society of Queensland, is dedicated to making available to as wide an audience as possible the life and works of Dr Carl Gustav Jung.

The Society focuses on three main vehicles as a means to achieve this goal; through monthly meetings, presenting workshops, and by making available to members and scholars, a library which has been carefully developed and selectively pruned over nearly three decades.

The scope of our interests includes presenting the work of Jung’s colleagues, students, and contemporaries. Our speakers also will explore the writings of the “post” Jungian authors who re-envisioned, re-imagined and extended the reach of Jung’s thought.

When the opportunity arises we also will explore those subjects which form the tree and roots of human consciousness and which find parallels in the wide range of Dr. Jung’s work. Such presentations may include; the thought and practices of a variety of spiritual and religious traditions, enduring philosophical influences, and literary and artistic achievements occurring over the historical landscape of human evolution.

Dr Jung was first and foremost a healer. The Society promotes an understanding of Jung’s work through the exploration of psychological and spiritual applications to our individual journey, interpersonal relationships, and contemporary collective challenges. We believe this study ultimately can help to create a safer, more soulful world for women and men to fulfil their destinies.
