Periods of loss, transition, and uncertainty often feel like endings, yet they may also mark the beginning of profound psychological growth. Guided Imagery and Music (GIM), a depth-oriented and evidence-based approach within music therapy, offers a unique way of exploring these experiences through music, imagery, emotion, and embodied awareness.
In a state of deep relaxation, music becomes more than something we hear; it becomes an inner landscape through which unconscious material can emerge and be explored. Drawing on the psychology of Carl Jung, this presentation examines experiences of symbolic death and rebirth as part of the individuation process—the lifelong movement toward greater wholeness through the integration of unconscious aspects of the self.
Through music, participants may encounter vivid imagery of descent, darkness, transformation, and renewal. While these experiences can be challenging, they often open pathways toward greater authenticity, meaning, and psychological integration when reflected upon and woven into everyday life.
The presentation will include brief musical excerpts and examples of client–therapist dialogue, offering a glimpse into both the inner journey and the therapeutic relationship that supports it. Participants will also be
invited into a short music listening experience, followed by an opportunity for reflection
and shared exploration, though participation is entirely optional.
